Peace Corps: Overview

Peace Corps Mission:
1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans.

Peace Corps Ecuador´s Mission:
In 2008-2010, PC/Ecuador seeks to promote sustainable development to improve the quality of life of the populations at the grass roots level with whom we collaborate while achieving Peace Corp´s three goals through our four programs: sustainable agriculture/agribusiness, public health, habitat conservation, and youth and families.

Rural Public Health Program Overview
General Info
The purpose of the Rural Public Health Program in that members of rural Ecuadorian communities are healthier. Some of the specific problems that are encountered in Ecuador are diseases preventable by vaccination; HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infection; vector-borne diseases, since Ecuador is a tropical country; chronic communicable diseases; nutritional and metabolic diseases; accidents and violence; and oral health. The program works towards healthier Ecuadorian communities using four goals which are improve maternal and child health; reduce HIV, STIs, and tuberculosis among the general population; strengthen local capacity to reduce transmission of vector-borne diseases in tropical areas; and decrease non-transmissible chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancer.
